I read this article 3 weeks ago and it comes back up in our discussions at Nature Towns, with some regularity. The key issue is that while coal is very dirty, wind (and likely solar) are not without issues during their full life cycle. The story talks about rural landfills filling up fast with old abandoned blades from some of the first wind farms. Given the growth of the industry, this could go from a small thing to a big thing quite quickly.
Happily the industry has funded some research and has a pilot facility to recycle the wind blade materials, but they lack an application/market for all of the resulting materials. This is a great topic for the Circular Economy.
